Music Theory

Research on tuning and musical structure.

My academic work focuses on just intonation, harmonic complexity, post-tonal theory, and musical form. I also build interactive tools for exploring tuning systems and analytical models.

Music theory projects

3 projects

Research projects, interactive tools, and visual models for thinking about tuning, harmony, and musical structure.

Harmonic Spiral Visualizer

An interactive spiral diagram for exploring the harmonic series and intervals and sets in just intonation.

A React and SVG visualization tool for plotting musical ratios on a logarithmic spiral. The tool grew out of my academic work on just intonation, harmonic complexity, and the representation of pitch relationships in continuous harmonic space.

Ratio Lattice Visualizer

An interactive 3D lattice for exploring just-intonation ratios through prime factors.

An interactive React and Three.js visualization that represents musical ratios as points in a spatial lattice. Each ratio is positioned according to its prime-factor structure, making it possible to compare intervals, chords, and harmonic regions visually.

Transformational Tonnetz

An interactive Tonnetz for exploring transformations between major and minor triads.

A React, TypeScript, and SVG web app for visualizing triadic relationships on a Tonnetz. The tool lets users select chords, show transformational relations, adjust the view, and trace paths through harmonic progressions.
